Zygomatic dental implants: the graftless technique

zirconia-image

Zygomatic dental implants are an innovative possibility or choice with traditional two-stage & immediate loading protocols for the rehabilitation of the atrophic posterior maxilla.

According to the conventional treatment, the only treatment option for the patients with bone loss in the posterior maxilla was bone grafting, to rebuild or regenerate the bone in order to construct an adequate foundation for traditional dental implants. Whereas, revolutionary zygomatic implant technique yields the advantage of eliminating the need for sinus lift & grafting procedures & thus help you achieve a comfortable & shorter treatment.

The procedure does not rely on the anchorage of the jaw bone, as do conventional dental implants, but rely solely on anchorage via zygoma.

Nearly all the patients have enough space & volume in the zygomatic bone to place one or two implants. When these implants are connected to a fixed dental bridge, they are ready to withstand normal masticatory forces.

Indications

Further indications for this revolutionary technique include:

  • Failed traditional dental implant placement
  • Unsuccessful grafting & sinus augmentation procedures.
  • Unsuccessful grafting & sinus augmentation procedures.

Procedure

For patients with severe atrophic posterior maxilla, it is quite difficult to place dental implants in that region. Since the loss of missing teeth in the posterior maxilla causes rapid bone loss & expansion of sinus cavities, which further creates another hurdle. Also, comprehensive grafting procedures can extend the treatment time. But the innovation of zygomatic implants serves as an alternative treatment to the conventional techniques.

Prior to the treatment, a patient is advised to undergo a CBCT scan that helps your implantologist to aid the treatment planning & precise implant placement.

The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia & involves the placement of one zygomatic implant on each side of the maxilla, along with 2-4 conventional dental implants in the anterior region for reasons of stability & can avert a lot of remorse afterward.

These implants are comparatively longer & benefit those who do not have adequate bone to support regular dental implants. Once the fixation of zygomatic implants is completed, a provisional prosthesis can be fixed immediately.

The advantages of these implants over sinus lift procedures are:

  • Overwhelming success rate
  • Reduced treatment time

Who can perform this procedure?

The procedure is quite technique sensitive & requires meticulous diagnosis & treatment planning. A highly trained & dedicated team with dexterity, considerable knowledge & excellent surgical expertise is essential.

Contraindications

The advantages of these implants over sinus lift procedures are:

  • Acute sinus infection
  • Pathology associated with maxilla or zygoma
  • Patients taking bisphosphonates
  • Underlying uncontrolled or malignant systemic disease
  • Smoking

Post operative care

After having fixed teeth on zygomatic implants one still need to maintain regular oral hygiene followed by use of brushing, water flosser for cleaning around the bridge & dental implants.

Just to get the mucosal area checked around the zygomatic implants, one must visit a dentist at least once in a month.

Not satisfied with your removable upper denture or have been informed that you do not have an adequate amount of bone in the back region of the upper jaw?
